The Workshop

About
Iron Keel Studio

Iron Keel Studio began where a lot of projects begin: with one person, one workshop, and a subject they couldn't stop thinking about.

The project started as an attempt to build one accurate display-scale model of a Virginia-class submarine. It turned into something larger — a drive to get the details right, to engineer a way to build at real display scale, and to share that work with others who have a connection to these boats.

Iron Keel is built on a close personal tie to the silent service and a respect for the people who crew these submarines. The work tries to honor that.

Today, Iron Keel is developing a growing fleet of submarine kits — Virginia-class, Columbia-class, and custom commemorative variants — built around the Keel Core hybrid construction system. None of them are shipping yet. But they're getting closer.

The Approach

One workshop.
No shortcuts.

  • Every hull design is measured, tested, and rebuilt until it fits.
  • Every kit is engineered so a first-time builder can finish it.
  • Every print, every paint, every problem goes in the build log.
  • No fake urgency. No countdowns. It's ready when it's ready.
  • The work respects the subject and the people who served on these boats.
